Interesting women doing interesting things: Kirsty Young
As a Melbourne headshot photographer I come across some incredible women. I created this blog category to show them off and the photos we make together. I sat down with Kirsty and asked her these 15 questions:
Name and job title?
Kirsty Young, Commercial Property Executive.
What would your drag queen name be?
Frizzy Izzy. Mostly in reference to what happens to my hair when it gets wet!
Biggest fashion disaster?
Back in the day when I was a teen it was trendy to wear a long-sleeved polo shirt (called a ‘grandpa shirt’) backwards – collar and buttons facing the back. I wore it with a 6 inch wide elastic ‘cinch belt’ and a frilly gingham ‘ra-ra’ skirt. Unless you’re around my vintage that won’t make any sense. Trust me it was not a good look.
You just won $100 million. What’s the first thing you’re buying?
Yes please! A large home with spectacular views.
Last time you cried and why?
I have a vulnerable child being harassed at school. Sorry I know that’s deep but it’s not easy.
You will never hear me say “that has too much coriander”. What will I never hear you say?
You can stop pouring that French champagne now please.
What makes you angry?
Drivers who deliberately close the gap so you can’t merge.
What gives you joy?
Fairy lights!!!!!!
What keeps you up at night?
Oooh nothing. I’m a really good sleeper.
Proudest moment in your career?
Mentoring new starters or strugglers and watching them take off in their own careers. It’s like nursing a bird with a broken wing then watching it fly (not that I’ve ever done that, I’m kind of scared of birds….but I can imagine!)
Career lesson you wish you had known when you started?
Never underestimate the value of preparation or in the words of Louis Pasteur “chance favours the prepared mind”.
Worst career moment?
Making a mistake in a spreadsheet that completely changed a large deal from a good opportunity to a bad one; and finding out after it had been presented to the investment committee. Ouch.
Favourite item of clothing and why?
I have a mint green cotton cardigan I purchased in London in 2002. Nothing fancy but it’s a great Sunday slouchy thing, and I think I’m so attached to it because of the fond memories it holds.
I wish I’d stop saying…
Anything that begins with ‘I can’t…’
What is the sexiest occupation?
I’m going with the traditional – fireman, policeman. My work bestie & I always used to make sure we were around for the fire evacuations lol!
