Let’s start at the beginning though. What the heck is Personal Branding you ask? There’s a range of definitions depending on context but one I like is:
Personal branding is the art of showing the world who you are and what you stand for—without having to explain it. It’s your reputation, your vibe, and the way people remember you, all wrapped up in a cohesive, strategic package. It’s how people describe you, when you aren’t in the room.
A personal branding photoshoot isn’t just about taking cute photos. It’s intentionally crafting a visual identity that tells your story, builds trust, and helps you connect with the right people—whether that’s clients, employers, or an audience. It’s your professional presence, distilled into images that work for you across platforms.
Madonna (I can’t resist a Madonna metaphor), was one of the pioneers of personal branding and taking charge of your image. She was (and is I guess) notoriously obsessive about the kinds of images that represent her in the world.
Unlike a standard headshot session, a personal branding shoot isn’t limited to one or two portraits. It’s a range of images potentially showcasing many sides of you. For some businesses like the previous example for Joey it may involve holding props and might be for a website for socials.
But for other people, it may just be beautiful portraits focusing on your face and style, like for another client Jessie who works in HR in the fashion industry. All photos on this page are by Photoform*.
Think about it: when people check you out online—whether it’s LinkedIn, Instagram, or your website—what do they see? A generic corporate headshot or even a mediocre AI generated image? Or a lovingly crafted collection of images that show you as an expert, a thought leader, a creator?
This isn’t just for influencers or entrepreneurs. If you have an online presence or need to market yourself in any way, you can benefit from a bespoke suite of images. Here’s how different professionals can use their personal branding photos:
Uses: Website, social media, online courses, webinars, speaker profiles, press opportunities.
Why? Potential clients need to see you as approachable, knowledgeable, and credible.
Uses: Website, press releases, promotional materials, speaking engagements, social media, the list goes on.
Why? Customers want to connect with real people behind a brand. Show them who you are, what you do, and why they should choose you over a faceless competitor.
Uses: LinkedIn, speaker profiles, press articles, social media.
Why? A strong, polished image helps reinforce your authority. When journalists or event organisers need a photo of you, you’ll be prepared with high-quality, professional images.
Uses: Social media, book covers, album art, posters, agent headshots, press and more.
Why? Your work is unique, so your images should reflect your personality and vibe.
Uses: LinkedIn, CV, personal website.
Why? First impressions matter. A strong personal brand can help you stand out in a sea of applicants and make hiring managers take you seriously. I had a client returning to the workforce and she commissioned me for portraits to signal to the market that she’s back and ready to do business.
Uses: Pitch decks, investor presentations, press coverage, LinkedIn, speaker profiles..
Why? Investors don’t just invest in ideas—they invest in people. Strong branding photography adds credibility to your startup’s story.
Once you have a great set of images, you’ll be surprised at how often you use them. Here are some ways to put them to work:
LinkedIn Profile & Banners
Social Media Content
Website & About Page
Email Signature
Press & Media Features
Online Courses & Webinars
Business Cards & Marketing Materials
Stickers
GIFs
Advertisements
Recruitment drives
Merch
Animated stop-motion profile pic
A great personal branding shoot is more than just a vanity project—it’s a strategic move. It puts you in control of your image, tells your story, and helps people connect with you before they even meet you.
It’s not about looking perfect—it’s about looking like you, in a way that aligns with your brand and goals.
So, if you’re still using an outdated or inconsistent mix of photos, maybe it’s time to level up. A strong personal brand doesn’t just happen—it’s built.
